Bassoonist

Edoardo Casali

Born in Bologna in 1995, he began studying bassoon at the age of 16, graduating in 2015 in Bologna with top honors under the guidance of Lorenzo Bettini. He continued his studies with Stefano Canuti at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, obtaining both an MMus and a PGDip with distinction.
In parallel, he studied contrabassoon with Bill Anderson (BBC Philharmonic) and Alessandro Ghibaudo (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia). Alongside his studies, he attended bassoon masterclasses with Matthias Rácz, Klaus Thunemann, Giorgio Mandolesi, Sergio Azzolini, Lorelei Dowling, and Johannes Schwarz.

In 2023, he won the permanent position of Principal Contrabassoon in the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano (Milan Symphony Orchestra), a role he currently holds.

In 2016, he was a member of the Italian Youth Orchestra and from 2018 to 2023, of the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra under Riccardo Muti.
He has also won auditions for the following orchestras: Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, and the "I Pomeriggi Musicali" Orchestra in Milan.
He was deemed eligible after auditions for the following orchestras: Teatro Lirico in Trieste and Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
He has collaborated with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Manchester Camerata, The Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Sanremo Symphony Orchestra, Brescia and Bergamo Festival Orchestra, Teatro Petruzzelli Orchestra in Bari, Teatro Verdi Orchestra in Trieste, Orchestra Civica di Fiati di Milano, "I Pomeriggi Musicali", and the Turin Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has performed under conductors such as Daniele Gatti, Jeffrey Tate, Riccardo Muti, Heinz Holliger, Alexander Lonquich, Jurah Valchua, Christoph Eschenbach, Wayne Marshall, James Conlon, Martin Brabbins, Leonidas Kavakos, Dennis Russell Davies, Markus Stenz, Enno Poppe, and Michele Mariotti.

He has toured Europe, China, and Vietnam.

As a soloist, he has performed works by Vivaldi, C.M. von Weber, Michael Daugherty, and others in Italy and the United Kingdom.

Following his passion for performing contemporary music, he was an academic fellow at the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme 2019 (Composition & Performance), NEXT 2020 (Birmingham Contemporary Music Group), London Sinfonietta Academy 2020, Ensemble Modem Akademie (Klangspuren Schwaz 2020), and Lucerne Festival Academy 2020.
In 2022, he collaborated with the research department of the G. Verdi Conservatory in Milan on a project exploring contemporary writing for the bassoon, and in 2023 he performed as a soloist with Divertimento Ensemble (Milan). He continues to commission new works for bassoon and contrabassoon.

Edoardo is a Bernd Moosmann GmbH (Waiblingen, Germany) artist and performs on a Moosmann Model 222 SC bassoon.

Composer

Edoardo Casali

Edoardo has studied Composition with A. Solbiati and G. Manca, graduating from the "G. Verdi" Conservatory in Milan with top honors and distinction.
He also participated in composition and electronic music masterclasses with M. Lanza, P. Billone, M. Di Bari, A. Bornhoeft, and J. Torres Maldonado. His music has been performed by ensembles such as MDI Ensemble and Divertimento Ensemble, as well as by soloists like percussionist Elio Marchesini and saxophonist Xelo Giner.

With a strong focus on new technologies and electronic sound processing, his catalog includes works for solo instruments (with or without electronics), chamber music, and symphonic orchestra, as well as numerous transcriptions of composers like J.S. Bach, G.P. Telemann, A. Vivaldi, M.E. Bossi, R. Schumann and others for various formations, wind ensembles, and large orchestras.

In 2024, his piece "L’Abate e il suo Tesoro (Music for a Secret Garden)" for flute, clarinet, prepared piano, percussion, and transducer won a special prize at the Ise-Shima International Composition Competition, IV Edition (Japan).
